Located in the south of France, in the heart of the Côte d'Azur, between the Baie des Anges and the Bay of Cannes, come and discover the famous Îles de Lérins. This archipelago is made up of two Mediterranean jewels: the Île Sainte-Marguerite and the Île Saint-Honorat. Between the blue sea, the pine trees and the underwater museum, a visit to the Islands is a must-have during a visit to the Côte d'Azur!
Their history? An adventure through the ages. Here, Ligurians and Romans have left their mark. Monks, soldiers and prisoners (the famous man in the iron mask) have also left their mark. Each island has its own unique character.
Sainte-Marguerite is famous for its fort and museum. Nature reigns supreme here, with exceptional flora and fauna. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking and swimming.
Then, between abbey and sea, there's Saint-Honorat, a haven of spiritual peace. For centuries, monks have lived here, producing wine and honey. It's a place where the past meets tranquility. Guided tours, tastings and meditations: the island offers unique experiences. Ready for a timeless exploration?
This guide will help you get to know the site a little better, find out how to get there, when departures are, etc.
How to get to the Îles de Lerins?
To plan a getaway to the Lerins Islands, here's what you need to know. You have several choices, but in this paragraph we're going to talk about the boat. There are several places where you can take a boat to the Îles de Lérins. Here they are:
Now let's talk boats. Their schedules vary with the seasons. By clicking on the links, you can consult the specific timetable for each crossing, the port of departure and arrival, and the price. They are more frequent in summer. And again, check the times online to avoid any surprises. It's worth noting that there are several transport companies, so it's normal that they won't be the same depending on where you're departing from.
Depending on your departure city (by following the links in the table), you'll be able to find information on the location of the platforms, the best time to visit, the different fares, whether the sites are accessible, etc. Depending on where you're departing from, you may be able to buy your tickets at the last minute (Cannes, for example), but buying your tickets online means you'll get a reduced price. What's more, even if we advise you not to come by car, especially in summer, you'll be able to find information on parking and where to park.
Of course, there are other ways of getting to the Lérins Islands. You can get there by renting a boat, kayak or even Stand-Up Paddle! (Although we rent out paddles, we don't recommend paddling, as the waves can be quite rough).
Choose your day carefully, as the weather plays a major role. In summer, don't worry, the weather's fine almost every day, but it can be hot! Depending on the year, spring and autumn offer gentleness and tranquillity. Remember to check the weather before you leave. It helps to choose the right clothes. Be prepared for blazing sun or light breezes.
But before you set out on your voyage of discovery, remember to pack a hat, water and sunscreen - all essential. Don't leave empty-handed! Comfortable footwear is a lifesaver, especially on hidden trails. Last but not least: rules. Islands are precious. Respect nature and follow the signs. Protected areas and eco-responsible actions are a must.
Sainte-Marguerite Island
Île Ste-Marguerite is the larger of the two islands. When it comes to wildlife, you can expect some surprising encounters. Mediterranean birds, small mammals and marine species inhabit the island. Every nook and cranny of the island reveals fascinating wildlife typical of the Mediterranean climate.
Between the pine forests, the fragrant eucalyptus and the incredible variety of flowers, the flora is not to be outdone. As you stroll between land and sea, you may even come across the occasional flower garden. You may also come across a few small ponds, but these are often fenced off, so avoid swimming in them.
The beaches here? A true paradise. Crystal-clear waters, fine sand, easy access. Some areas even offer services for added comfort. But it's not all about nature. History is in full swing too.
Fort Royal stands proudly. A monument steeped in history and unique architecture. Don't miss the famous prison of the Man in the Iron Mask (and his famous legend!). A historical mystery that still arouses curiosity.
The island's museums complete this journey through time. Their collections tell the story of centuries of history and culture. A word of advice: if you want to visit the museum, the abbey and go for a swim or a walk at the same time, we recommend that you :
- come early in the morning,
- or come for 2 days,
Doing both in the same day is relatively difficult. Personally, we've never managed to enjoy the page and visit the museums on the same day.
But Ile Ste-Marguerite is all about action! Hiking here is unforgettable. Choose from a range of routes for all levels. And the views? Breathtaking. Fancy a dive? Sublime spots surround the island. Diving centers and equipment are at your fingertips.
There's even an underwater museum on a beach at the back of the island. If you're equipped with a decathlon diving mask, you'll be able to take a closer look at the statutes that make it up.
And that's not all. Kayaking, paddling, sailing, adventure is everywhere (for a little advertising, if you want to rent paddles to go to the Lerins Islands, Loc'Njoy lets you rent them for 2 or 3 days at a low price). Each activity offers you a new perspective on the island. Ready for adventure? Sainte-Marguerite awaits you.
Saint-Honorat Island
Île St-Honorat has been a haven of peace for centuries, a journey through time. Founded in the 1st century AD, the abbey is the beating heart of the island. Here, monks devote their lives to prayer and work. Their daily routine? A mixture of meditation, chanting and agricultural labor.
A visit to this sacred site is like stepping back in time. Admire the ancient architecture, witness to centuries of history. Every stone in the abbey tells a story. Don't miss the monuments scattered around the island, marked by time but majestic.
And then there are the monastic delights. The monks produce renowned wines, the fruit of ancestral knowledge. Wine tasting is a must. You'll discover unique flavors, created with passion. But it's not just wine. Taste golden honey and liqueurs, other treasures of the island.
This island isn't just a place. It's an experience, a lesson in life and history. Saint-Honorat is an invitation to calm and reflection.
Like Ste-Marguerite, St-Honorat also offers unforgettable walks and breathtaking scenery. Being less well-known than its big sister, there will be fewer visitors on the beaches, and touring the island will be easier. The beaches are less sandy, however, giving way to small coves and a truly relaxing atmosphere.
In conclusion, it's a must-see!
As you can imagine, we love it here. If you love nature, you must come and visit these jewels of the Côte d'Azur. Whether you're looking for a walk or a swim, you'll love it!
We hope to see you soon!
